Northern Access Road: route diversion and parking changes at Royal Cornwall Hospital
Starting on Friday 11 October 2024, the road leading out of the S2 staff car park up to the Helipad at the Royal Cornwall Hospital will be closed until the end of February 2025. This also affects access to and from the Health and Wellbeing Innovation Centre.
Groundworks for the new Northern Access Road (NAR) through what will be Langarth Garden Village (parallel to the A390) have been ongoing for some time. Cormac are currently trenching directly outside the Health and Wellbeing Innovation Centre (HWIC) to lay the pipework required for a geothermal heat network which will provide future opportunities for heating the HWIC and hospital estate.
From 11 October, this work will be moving up the road, towards the Helipad between the main hospital Car Park 1C and the Sterile Services Department.
Diversions
The map highlights the diversions in place for those people working in the HWIC. They will be diverted on a route that takes them through the RCH staff car park and then across the road at the bottom into HWIC. The current exit will become two-way, but only for those using HWIC. Staff car parks users will enter and exit the car park via the new barrier. This is a temporary arrangement while the work is completed.
Additionally, approximately 28 spaces at the top of staff car park (before the barrier) will be newly designated as Pay & Display car parking for use by patients and visitors. This is compensated for with the additional spaces created in the gravel pit staff car park.
Diversion signage will be in place to make it easy to follow and the SABA team will be on site to assist with the new arrangements.
When the road re-opens next spring, there will be two options for leaving the hospital site – via the Northern Access Road of the A390.
